PURPOSE & VISION
Our Mission and Values
At Stevenson, our mission begins with a belief that joyful learning and academic achievement are not separate pursuits.
Students learn best when they are challenged by strong academics, encouraged by teachers who know them well, and given room to ask questions, explore big ideas and discover the satisfaction that comes from meaningful work.
Inspired by the places where we learn and defined by the excellence we ask of ourselves, Stevenson prepares students for success in school and in their lives beyond school while helping them develop a lifelong passion for learning and achievement.
Stevenson’s Mission
Stevenson School has long been committed to a mission described by three central aims:
Prepare students for success in school and beyond.
Students build the knowledge, confidence and habits they need for the next step — and for the many steps that follow.
To foster their passion for learning and achievement.
Students are challenged to think carefully, work with purpose and take pride in their growth.
To help them shape a joyful life.
Students learn in a community that values curiosity, friendship, creativity, resilience and care for others.

What We Value, Who Our Students Become
When Stevenson is at its best, our values are reflected in the way we learn, treat one another and contribute to our community. Shaped by the voices of our students, families, alumni, faculty and staff, these six values express who we are and what matters most. They guide the Stevenson experience and help shape the people our students become.
Our Motto
Our school motto, “Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re”, “gentle in manner, resolute in deed,” encapsulates our approach to learning and living in community.
Stevenson’s motto captures something essential about the School. We ask students to move through the world with kindness and humility, while also meeting challenges with courage and conviction.
Our faculty and staff are proud to work in partnership with Stevenson families as students grow into thoughtful, capable and compassionate people. We want our students to be kind, to act with integrity and to look for ways to do good wherever they are.
The Stevenson Prayer and Song
Stevenson’s prayer and song draw on the writings of Robert Louis Stevenson, after whom the school is named. Generations of Stevenson students have recited the prayer since the School’s inception in 1952. The song is often sung at assemblies and other gatherings on the Carmel Campus.
