Welcome to Grade 3
Dear Families,
Welcome to grade 3! We are excited to meet you and your child and begin our year full of learning and discovery! Our dynamic, robust, and engaging curriculum includes literacy, writing skills, cursive letter formations, mathematics (with a focus on multiplication and division), STEM, social studies, art, music, dance, physical education, Spanish, and social-emotional skills. In grade 3, students learn the fundamentals of geography, explore different cultures and public service roles, write stories using workshop techniques and attend exciting field trips including the Pt. Sur lighthouse. We look forward to creating a welcoming and inclusive community of students, families, and teachers.
Katie Klevan ’95
Katie is excited to begin her third year teaching grade 3 after 13 years of teaching physical education at Stevenson. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a BA in liberal studies: elementary education and a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language. When she received her Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from California State University Monterey Bay in 2004, she was hired as a grade 3 co-teacher at Stevenson School. After three years of teaching grade 3 and 4, she took over the role of the School’s physical education teacher and athletics director. Katie also served as a middle school advisor and athletics coach. Katie has received professional training from Toolbox Tools, Responsive Classroom, Reading and Writing Project, the American Camp Association, and Columbia University Klingenstein Institute’s Workshop for Elementary Educators.
Katie lives in her hometown of Pacific Grove with her husband, Tony ’98, and their two sons, Sam (12) and Johnny (16). After graduating from Stevenson, where she played field hockey, softball, and lacrosse, Katie worked as a counselor at Stevenson Summer Camp. This fulfilling experience guided her to a career in teaching and camp administration. Katie is an avid runner, outdoorswoman, and player of whatever sport or game is available to her.
Marisa Tonini
Marisa is looking forward to her first year at Stevenson where she will begin her 19th year of teaching. Marisa attended Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, where she received her BA in Liberal Studies as well as her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She has worked in both public and private school settings spending her first years teaching in Visalia, California. Moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 2002, she spent six years in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District teaching grade 3. Over the past 10 years, Marisa taught Kindergarten and then grade 3 at Santa Catalina School. Marisa’s professional training includes Orton-Gillingham Approach, Singapore Math, and Toolbox. She is thrilled and ready for new adventures at Stevenson School.
Marisa loves living on the Monterey Peninsula with her husband, Chris, and their 3 high school age children, Sophia (16), Jacob (14), and Nicholas (14). She enjoys family time at the beach, snow skiing, finding new coffee shops, reading a good book, and walking her much loved golden retriever, Bixby.
We look forward to connecting with you on August 23rd at orientation and beginning our Grade 3 adventure together. Go Pirates!
Warmly,
Mrs. Katie Klevan & Mrs. Marisa Tonini
