Where we've been

Our Legacy of Growth
and Excellence

Since its founding in 1952, Robert Louis Stevenson School has long embraced a spirit of adventure, curiosity, resilience, and bravery.

Just as our namesake found inspiration in this region, our school has continued to evolve, preserving our commitment to challenge and excellence while fostering a joyful, inclusive environment where every student can thrive.

Guided by these principles, Stevenson has grown from a single location in Pebble Beach into a vibrant PK-12 community of learners across two campuses dedicated to collaboration, developing a sense of belonging, and instilling in students the purpose of making a positive change in our world. Our curriculum and co-curricular activities challenge students academically while encouraging curiosity and joy. With a well-planned, data-informed approach, we continually refine our programs to ensure they serve students’ needs while tracking learning outcomes to ensure our instruction is effective. This delivers a balanced, enriching experience that prepares them for both their time in our classrooms, and for whatever comes next. From early foundational skills in the Lower Division to deep, enduring learning in the Middle and Upper Divisions, every element of our curriculum is designed to develop critical thinkers, feed curiosity, and prepare students for success in their lives at Stevenson and beyond.

Where we are today

Our Community of Curiosity, Joy, and Challenge

Stevenson stands at a transformative moment in its history, with education evolving rapidly due to advances both in technology and our understanding of how children learn best.

In order to best serve the students who entrust us with their education, we must surround them with expert teachers, a healthy school culture and world-class facilities in which to learn.

Grounded in our mission to inspire students to develop a passion for learning, achieve academic and personal success, and shape joyful lives, we are uniquely positioned to embrace the future. Our school motto, Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re — "gentle in manner, resolute in deed" — reflects the values of kindness, purpose, and determination that define our approach to education and community.

Stevenson is embarking on a period of growth, innovation, and sustainability, driven by our commitment to fostering both individual and collective achievement. As we prepare students not only for success in school but for their lives beyond, our focus on intellectual rigor, character development, and cultural humility ensures that every student is equipped to thrive in an increasingly complex world. For generations, Stevenson has brought together students from our backyard on the Monterey Peninsula with young people from across the country and around the world to create an unrivalled learning community. Here they have the opportunity to learn alongside and collaborate with peers from different backgrounds, experiences and cultures. This early exposure to local and global diversity is the perfect preparation for their futures in college and beyond.

Recent years have seen remarkable progress. We have attracted outstanding students, expanded our academic programs, upgraded facilities, and fostered a more inclusive and supportive environment. We have strengthened co-curricular offerings, enhancing the joy of learning through experiential opportunities that challenge students and encourage creativity.

Where we're headed

Our Vision for a Thriving Future

Looking to the future, Stevenson is committed to a vision of sustainable growth, innovation, and deepened academic success.

Building on our rich legacy, we aim to expand access and inclusivity through thoughtful, evidence-based practices that empower our students and enhance the quality of our programs. By carefully measuring learning outcomes and student growth through the effective use of assessment data, we ensure that our curriculum, support services, and co-curricular programs meet the highest standards of educational impact. Our focus on well-being and support for students, as well as professional development for educators, reflects our dedication to fostering an environment where every member of our community can grow.

With a commitment to sustainable financial stewardship, we are planning strategically to secure the resources needed to support future generations. Our expansion of Equity and Inclusion initiatives across both campuses reinforces our dedication to cultivating an environment that builds the sense of belonging that we know leads to better learning outcomes for children and greater retention of excellent employees. Additionally, we are embracing advanced technologies that enhance both learning and operational efficiency, supporting innovation in every aspect of school life.

As Stevenson continues to inspire growth and excellence within a joyful learning community, we invite our community to join us in shaping the next chapter of our journey. Together, we will build on our accomplishments guided by our shared values, preparing students not just for academic success but for meaningful, impactful lives.

As we bring Stevenson’s vision to life, we will be guided by these principles:

Advancing Equity and Inclusion Across Both Campuses

We are committed to expanding our equity and inclusion initiatives on both campuses, ensuring that every student, family, and faculty member feels respected, valued, and empowered. Through thoughtful programming, affinity groups, and community-wide engagement, we create a place where all identities are embraced and respected.

Foster Academic Excellence and a Lifelong Love of Learning

Priorities 1

At Stevenson, academic excellence is the foundation of our mission. We are committed to fostering an educational environment that takes full advantage of the beauty and inspiration of California's Monterey Peninsula to instill curiosity, creativity, purpose, and a joy for learning.

We will:

  • Amplify Place-Based Learning: Further leverage the opportunities of Stevenson's unparalleled location to enhance the academic and personal growth of our students. From studying marine biology in nearby tidepools and exploring local indigenous cultures or engaging with local industry, place-based learning supports interdisciplinary studies and ensures deep engagement.

  • Expand Real-World Applications: Integrate opportunities into our curriculum that allow students to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world challenges and see the relevance of their studies. Whether designing eco-dream houses, managing operations for a local business, or solving applied problems at every level of our math program, students will connect their learning to meaningful outcomes that prepare them for life beyond the classroom.

  • Cultivate Learning for Good: Promote learning experiences that support students' sense of social responsibility. By fostering the development of their leadership, critical thinking, kindness, empathy, and ingenuity, students graduate from Stevenson with the tools and inspiration to impact their communities in meaningful and transformative ways.

  • Track and Articulate Skills Development: Continuously articulate and track the skills students are learning at every stage, from PK-12, to ensure that our curriculum is cohesive, personalized, and builds on foundational knowledge while taking full advantage of the distinctive opportunities offered across all three of Stevenson's divisions.

  • Foster an Environment Grounded in Belonging and Representation: Further integrate equity and inclusion throughout the PK-12 curriculum. Continue to foster a sense of belonging in every classroom, as we prepare students to engage thoughtfully and with empathy, in a world with diverse perspectives.

  • Leverage Data-Informed Decision Making: Continue to utilize data to inform decision-making at all levels of instruction and student development. This data-driven approach ensures personalized learning, tracks progress across subjects, and refines teaching methods to continually strengthen students' academic growth.

  • Inspire Critical Thinking, Curiosity, and Advocacy: Deepen our efforts to foster our students' ability to engage meaningfully in learning, build their critical thinking skills, and find their voice. This includes empowering students to instigate change, become advocates in the world, and use their voice to stand up for themselves and those around them who may not have the ability to do so.

  • Elevate Math and STEM Excellence Across All Divisions: Expand opportunities for hands-on exploration from foundational concepts in the lower division to field-based projects in the middle division and interdisciplinary projects in the upper division. Critical to this work is the development of Stevenson's math, science, and engineering center (MSEC) ensuring state-of-the art facilities and resources inspire curiosity and innovation.

  • Embrace Evolving AI Technologies: Responsibly embrace evolving AI technologies to assist teachers and division heads with scope and sequence of curriculum efforts and other classroom-based initiatives. Create a culture of literacy about generative AI among students and faculty that allows community members to engage with Generative AI in creative and ethical ways to amplify learning.

  • Attract, Retain, and Support Exceptional Faculty: Continue to retain and support outstanding faculty with competitive compensation and generous benefits along with robust professional development opportunities. As openings arise, engage in extensive searches (international in scope) to source highly talented educators who bring new ideas and areas of expertise. The result is a dynamic team of educators from a wide variety of backgrounds; a balanced blend of early career teachers and seasoned educators to bring a strategic mix of tradition and innovation to each classroom, preparing students to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

Broaden Access and Foster Inclusivity, Equity, and Belonging at Stevenson

Priorities 3

Every student is unique, and it is our responsibility to make certain they feel seen, heard, and respected. Our mission compels us to prepare students to live a joyful life, and belonging to a caring, inclusive, and culturally diverse community forms the foundation of this work. Generations of research and experience have taught us that students thrive both academically and emotionally when they feel a sense of belonging within a school community. This can only be developed through sustained extensive, thoughtful, and structured programming that begins at the point of admission to Stevenson.

The school's mission extends beyond our students' years at Stevenson. Our alumni continue to feel this sense of connection and responsibility as part of a global Stevenson community committed to caring for one another long after they move beyond the school.

We also know that employee performance and retention are enhanced when they feel a sense of inclusion, connection, purpose, and agency in the workplace. Stevenson will achieve greater organizational excellence by creating and maintaining a work environment wherein all employees feel valued and recognized for their contributions.

Therefore, we will:

  • Expand Access and Affordability: Grow our ability to invite the most impactful students to our community regardless of their ability to pay by building our financial aid endowment, and ensure that all admitted students have access to the full Stevenson experience by growing the Full Experience Fund, which provides financial support for non-tuition expenses for our highest need students.

  • Enhance Professional Growth and Inclusive Practices: Invest in ongoing professional development for all faculty and staff to support continuous growth in and around inclusion and belonging, thereby advancing curriculum, assessment measures, teaching pedagogy, and operational practices that best reflect our commitment to all students, PK-12.

  • Expand admissions outreach to underserved communities through targeted admissions travel and ongoing partnerships with local and national community-based organizations (CBOs). Work closely with families to move them through the admissions and financial aid (if applicable) processes. Through extensive training for admissions officers, continue the practice of evaluating candidates with a consistent rubric that is need-blind and reduces bias and creates a sense of connection and belonging for all applicants from their first point of contact with the school.

  • Strengthen Student Belonging and Community: Enhance the development of student belonging both at the point of arrival through extended orientation programming and peer mentorship for new students, and throughout a student's time at the school through further development of student-facing community programming that reinforces our endeavor to cultivate a safe, supportive and joyful environment in all facets of school life.

  • Cultivate a Culture of Belonging: Foster deeper engagement with parents/guardians and employees through targeted conversation and climate surveying to cultivate a sustained ethos of belonging for our current staff, students, and families.

  • Appoint a Director of Community, Culture and Belonging to our senior leadership team , who will focus on growing and maintaining the strong sense of community and belonging that leads to a joyful school culture, and lead us on a community-wide examination of and commitment to our shared values.

  • Foster Alumni Engagement and Connection: Engage in regular dialogue (both in person and virtually) with alumni to determine how the school can evolve in building and sustaining a sense of belonging and connection to the school post-graduation.

  • Elevate employee sense of connection and belonging: Continue to evaluate the employee experience, including salary and benefits, to understand employee needs and preferences, thus ensuring an equitable and optimal menu of benefits that supports employees (and their families) at different stages of life.

  • Build On a Tradition of Athletic Excellence: Continue to enhance our athletics program for our upper and middle divisions to promote engagement, teamwork, and personal growth. Through these enhancements, we will support students' sense of purpose and build their confidence, leadership and performance skills, ensuring our full spectrum of students, from first-time participants to future Division 1 college athletes, can meet their goals.

  • Enrich Our Vibrant Arts Programs: Broaden opportunities in theater, music, and other expressive arts, encouraging students to develop their unique talents and creativity while deepening Stevenson's connection to the local community. These enhancements will impact both our academic arts programs in academics as well as in our after-school programs. These enhancements will help foster a collaborative spirit, support students' self-expression, and deepen their understanding of how the arts can contribute to the betterment of our world.

  • Strengthen and Expand Our Service-Learning Programs: Enrich our efforts to integrate community service with classroom instruction and increase opportunities for students to meaningfully and responsibly engage in service both across campuses and in the greater community, instilling a commitment to civic engagement and social responsibility while gaining practical skills.

  • Prioritize Environmental Sustainability: Continue incorporating green technologies and sustainable practices into all campus development projects, ensuring that Stevenson's growth aligns with our commitment to conservation and responsible resource management. As part of these efforts, support California's green building code to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the environmental impact of buildings by promoting sustainable construction practices and setting minimum standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, sustainable construction materials like low-embodied carbon timber, and other environmentally carbon-smart products.

  • Harness Advanced Technology to Elevate Learning and Operations

    • Continue to consolidate the school's core administrative business functions and school data storage within Slate, our primary school information system to reduce costs, streamline workflows, and personalize our community members' experiences.

    • Remain focused on "best-in-class" cybersecurity practices and system development to ensure the ongoing good stewardship of school data.

    • Continue to leverage emerging AI technologies and explore improved methods for analyzing school data. We will continue to use tools to help the school develop strategic, data-driven recommendations for future growth.
