- 100th Day of School – Feb. 17: This special milestone is a fun way for students to reflect on how much they've learned and grown while engaging in activities centered around the number 100. Families are welcome to help students prepare in the following ways:
- Talk with your child about what they've learned in school so far this year and what they're most proud of.
- Practice counting to 100 at home (by 1s, 5s or 10s, depending on your child's grade level).
- Encourage creative thinking by helping your child imagine what they might look like or hope to accomplish in 100 years.
- Read books together that celebrate counting or milestones (teachers will also be sharing favorites in class).
Middle Division
- Upcoming Field Trip: Grade 7 students have been exploring the Great Depression through an interdisciplinary history and math simulation, developing authentic 1930s characters from New York, Oklahoma and California. This Thursday, Feb. 5, students will participate in a hands-on field trip where they will shop on a limited budget that reflects their character's financial hardships, purchasing clothing from Goodwill and groceries for lunch. The clothing will be worn at a culminating Great Depression Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 19, where students will present proposed New Deal programs to a mock government panel. Items purchased will be donated back to Goodwill following the event.
- Grade 8 Upper Division Electives/Co-Curricular Open House: Students will visit the Pebble Beach campus for an Upper Division Electives/Co-Curricular Open House on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Pebble Beach Campus Updates
|
- Sophomore EXPO Training Classes: This week's trainings for students going on EXPO are tomorrow, Feb. 2; Tuesday, Feb. 3; or Wednesday, Feb. 4, with sessions at 3:10 p.m. or 5 p.m., on Rosen Stage. This week students will learn how to light a stove and cook a tasty meal.
- Grade 12 Parent/Guardian Transitions Event: Join us this Wednesday, Feb. 4. In-person attendees will meet in the Learning Commons at 6 p.m.; Zoom attendees can join at 6:30 p.m. College applications are complete and we will spend the time thinking both about how to savor these final months before graduation and how to partner in preparing our seniors for their next adventures. We will also use the opportunity to talk through the logistics of graduation week and all of the celebrations that lie ahead. Register here.
- Community Outreach: On Monday, Feb. 9, 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m., Dr. Casey Grover '02 and school nurse Erica Sanborn will be on the Pebble Beach campus in Douglas Hall to distribute Narcan dispensers to our community members. The school will send all parents/guardians an email with a form that may be completed in order to have your child opt out. Narcan is a nasal spray that can be used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Dr. Grover shared about the importance of Narcan during his parent/guardian and student talks this year. After the success of the last two year's distributions, we want to continue to offer this to our community members. Please know that this is not in response to any activity on campus but to our continued commitment to our community's safety and the greater Monterey County community. Please see this document for more detailed information. Please reach out to Director of Student Leadership and Wellness Curriculum Sarah Koshi with logistical questions or to Upper Division School Nurse Erica Sanborn with any questions that pertain to Narcan. For the Carmel campus, we will only be distributing Narcan to parents/guardians, not to students.
- Lunar New Year Monday Night Dinner and Vespers: On Monday, Feb. 9, students will enjoy traditional Asian cuisine and musical performances, and Vespers speeches given by members of our Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Day students are welcome to attend and should email the Director of Residential Life Marykate Colao to reserve their spot. The evening will begin at 5:45 p.m. and conclude around 8 p.m.
- Residential Life:
- Presidents Day Long Weekend: Passes for the long President's Day weekend (Friday, Feb. 13 – Monday, Feb. 16) are due by Monday, Feb. 9. Students are able to leave after all commitments on Thursday, Feb. 12, and need to be back on campus by 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16. Classes resume Tuesday, Feb. 17.
- Spring Break Passes: Spring break is March 7-22. EXPO students must submit passes by Tuesday, Feb. 17; all other students must submit by Friday, Feb. 20. Students can depart campus after their final academic obligation on Friday, March 6 and need to be off campus by noon on Saturday, March 7. Residential students can return on Sunday, March 22, at 12 p.m. Residential students who submit late passes will be assigned one day of weekend campusment. Any students needing to leave early or return late will be assigned a Friday night study hall for every day that they are not present. Early leaves or late returns will not be excused due to travel. Thank you for helping students adhere to appropriate deadlines and expectations.
- Community Education:
- Health & Life: This cycle and next, all Grade 10 students will engage in lessons around sexual health and ethics. Health & Life teachers will present research-based information about the messaging that pornography and sexually explicit media convey about sex, bodies and consent. We know how important it is to provide students with accurate information about sexual health and to give them resources – including supportive adults – where they can get their questions answered as they navigate the complexities of adolescence. Peggy Orenstein, author and sex educator, offers her insight about the importance of discussing pornography with adolescents in this New York Times guest essay. Here is a link to additional resources and information to support continued conversations at home. Please reach out to Director of Student Leadership and Community Curriculum Sarah Koshi with any questions.
- Grade 11 Session: This Friday, Feb. 6, Casey Grover '02, MD, FACEP, FASAM will return to campus to talk with students about drugs, alcohol and addiction during community time. Dr. Casey Grover is a lifelong resident of Monterey County, a graduate of Stevenson and current parent. Dr. Grover will be accompanied by a group of folks in recovery who will participate in a panel sharing their own experiences with addiction and recovery. Please reach out to Sarah Koshi with questions.
- College Center Events:
- Athletics Recruiting Night: This Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m., Co-Director of College Counseling Jon Burke will share information to help student-athletes and their families better understand the college athletic recruiting process. This program is intended for families with students in Grades 9–11.
- Junior College Tours: A reminder for students participating in the Southern California and Pacific Northwest college tours that there is an early departure time of 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12. Students should plan to arrive at Douglas Hall no later than 3 a.m. for check-in to ensure we are able to depart on time.
- SAT for Juniors: Stevenson will offer the SAT School Day on Wednesday, March 4, for the Class of 2027 only. It is not required, but the College Center recommends that all juniors take advantage of this opportunity. Students must register to take it on their Pirate Page by Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 5 p.m. For juniors who are also EXPO Co-leaders, a make-up date will be available after spring break. The College Center will share more details in the coming weeks.
