Dear Prospective Lower Division Families,
At Stevenson, we believe every child deserves the confidence and clarity that come from strong communication skills. Our Foundations of Expression: Writing Workshop helps young learners discover their voices, build essential writing habits, and express their ideas with purpose and joy.
Grounded in the Teachers College Columbia University Writing Workshop model, our approach makes writing a natural part of how students think and learn. Children write about what interests them, explore a range of genres, and begin to understand the power of their words.
A Strong Start
The skills developed in our Lower Division prepare students for success in middle and upper school—and for whatever paths they choose beyond Stevenson.
Personalized and Data-Informed
A comprehensive progress-tracking system allows teachers to tailor instruction, provide targeted support, and ensure every child grows at the right pace. This work has already led to meaningful gains, especially in reading.
A Rich Writing Experience
Students explore narrative, informational, persuasive, poetry, literary, and journalistic styles—building confidence as thinkers and communicators.
Inspired, Confident Writers
Our goal is simple: help students enjoy writing and feel proud of their ideas. As they see their work come to life on the page, they gain skills—and a sense of self—that lasts.
