At Stevenson, science education combines rigorous inquiry with the remarkable natural laboratory of the Monterey Peninsula. In our advanced facilities—anchored by the new mathematics, science, and engineering center opening Fall 2026—students engage in hands-on experimentation and real-world research. Through core courses, advanced electives, and field research opportunities, they develop both technical expertise and a deep understanding of scientific principles, preparing them to address the complex challenges of our time.

Featured Courses

Environmental Science Honors

Using the incredible resources on and near the Monterey Peninsula, students complete experiential labs—on nearby beaches and in our surrounding pine forest—that prompt them to explore their local environments through real world issues.

Experimental Chemistry

This lab-driven chemistry course challenges students to explore questions that help to reveal the world of unseen atoms with the goal of understanding what makes “good” data in order to better understand the physical and chemical world. Lab work is conducted in almost every class.

Field Astronomy

Field Astronomy examines both the dynamics of planetary systems and the life and death of stars. The course examines Kepler’s laws of planetary motion, Newton’s Law of universal gravitation and the theory behind solar system dynamics. A weekend field trip and multiple evening telescope sessions are highlights of students’ experience

Discovering Nature’s Wonders at Stevenson

The rich biodiversity of our campus and surrounding Del Monte Forest becomes a living laboratory for student discovery. One remarkable example is Leo L. ’25, who leveraged his passion for natural science and authored two comprehensive field guides which the school supported for publishing and are now commercially available. Leo demonstrates how Stevenson students can combine scientific rigor with authentic exploration of our unique coastal environment.
